Sunlight

Let the Sun Reset Your Body Clock
One of the keys to managing jet lag is sunlight, specifically getting outdoors at the right time.
Your body runs on its own clock
Every one of us has an internal circadian rhythm, a roughly 24-hour cycle that tells us when to sleep, wake, eat and think clearly. It isn’t a metaphor. It’s a biological timing system, and it’s ancient. Even single-celled algae keep a light-responsive clock.
When you fly across time zones, that clock stays on home time while the sun does something else entirely. The mismatch is jet lag.
Why light is the strongest signal
Your eyes contain special receptors, separate from the ones you use to see, that detect light for the sole purpose of setting your body clock. They’re most sensitive to blue-green light, which is abundant in natural daylight. When those receptors detect it, they send a message to your brain’s master clock: this is daytime. Do that at the right moment, and the clock recalibrates.
Indoor lighting is far dimmer than even an overcast day outside. A hotel room or conference centre just doesn’t deliver the same signal. You need to get outdoors.
Timing is everything
As a rough guide:
- Flying east: seek morning sun at your destination. It nudges your clock earlier.
- Flying west: seek afternoon sun. It helps your clock shift later.
Get it wrong and the same sunlight can push your clock the wrong way, so timing matters as much as exposure.
Why one-size-fits-all advice falls short
People differ in their internal timing, which is called chronodiversity. Some are natural early risers, others night owls, and that shapes when light helps and when it hurts. Add the number of time zones crossed and the direction of travel, and the “right” window for sunlight differs from person to person. On big eastward trips, for example, morning light can be counterproductive for the first day or two.
That’s why a generic checklist rarely delivers. The best results come from working out when your clock currently sits, then timing your light exposure to match.
The takeaway
Sunlight is free, drug-free and one of the most powerful tools you have against jet lag. Use it deliberately, at the right time for your body, and you’ll land sharper and recover faster.
